Engaging Communities In Prevention
Respite Childcare
The Need
Community needs assessment data underscore the concern in the Twin Rivers to support families at risk for child neglect and abuse. At home parents of young children have had little in the way of day-time programs to participate in and day care spaces have been at a premium in most of the Twin Rivers communities. Parent support to combat isolation and stress are essential to healthy parenting.
Actions
A respite childcare program, modeled on a long-running, successful community based program was developed by a network member agency. The program includes a State licensed day care facility that is used for drop-off childcare - up to a maximum number of hours per week. This service allows parents to have down time, keep appointments, manage household chores or rest, while their young children are in a safe and fun environment. The Neighborhood Child Depot is staffed and managed by an early childhood professional. Supportive programs for parents are also organized at the same location as the Depot, so that parents may also build social support.
Involvement
Franklin United Methodist Church has donated space and staff time for the Neighborhood Child Depot. Funding from the Providian National Bank, Lakes Region Charitable Foundation, Merrimack County Incentive Funds, Franklin Savings Bank Community Funds, Merrimack County Savings Bank, NH Children's Trust Fund, have paid for staff and licensing requirements. The support of the Twin Rivers Interfaith Council, Neighbor to Neighbor, Prevent Child Abuse of Merrimack County, and Child and Family Services of NH help to provide programs for parents.
